Swissport Expands E-Commerce Operations in Liège, Belgium
Swissport, a prominent aviation services provider, is significantly enhancing its European e-commerce logistics capabilities with the inauguration of a new 5,500 square meter second-line warehouse at Liège Airport (LGG) in Belgium. This facility, dedicated exclusively to processing high-volume import parcels, increases Swissport’s total e-commerce footprint in Liège to 9,000 square meters and enables a daily throughput capacity of up to 300 tonnes.
Strategic Expansion Amid Growing E-Commerce Demand
The expansion reflects the rapid growth of global e-commerce, which is approaching $8 trillion in sales and driving unprecedented order volumes, rising returns, and increasingly stringent delivery deadlines. Liège has emerged as one of Europe’s fastest-growing cargo hubs, particularly for online retail, making it a strategic location for logistics providers aiming to meet surging cross-border demand. Swissport’s investment underscores its commitment to scaling capacity in key markets to support its airline and integrator partners.
Dirk Goovaerts, CEO Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India & Global Cargo Chair at Swissport, emphasized the significance of the new facility, stating, “With this investment, we are enhancing our ability to deliver fast, data-driven and sustainable logistics solutions for our airline and integrator partners. It’s another step in building scalable capacity where our customers need it most.”
Advanced Integration and Operational Efficiency
The new warehouse is designed to support fully integrated import handling operations, including cargo collection, shuttling, breakdown, scanning, sorting, and final loading for last-mile delivery. Swissport has integrated customers’ Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) directly with its proprietary CargoSpot platform, ensuring real-time visibility, accuracy, and data integrity throughout the logistics process. The site is fully bonded and optimized for cross-dock operations, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and on-time performance.
As Swissport expands its footprint in Liège, it enters a competitive environment where other logistics providers are increasingly adopting automation and artificial intelligence to streamline fulfillment and manage peak season surges. This dynamic is expected to drive further investment in technology and diversification of logistics strategies across the sector, as companies strive to offer faster, more reliable, and sustainable solutions.
Swissport’s latest investment not only addresses the evolving challenges of e-commerce logistics but also reinforces Liège’s position as a critical hub for international parcel flows.
