Volocopter Unveils New Light Sports and Air Taxi Models
Volocopter, the German manufacturer renowned for its distinctive two-seat, electrically powered aircraft featuring a ring of propellers above the cabin, is reemerging under new ownership. Following its bankruptcy declaration in early 2025, the company was acquired by Diamond Aircraft in March of the same year. Since then, Volocopter has undergone a quiet restructuring process, leveraging Diamond’s extensive aviation expertise to accelerate the development of its next-generation aircraft.
Advancing Next-Generation eVTOL Aircraft
This week, Volocopter announced an intensified focus on research, development, and production for two principal models: the VoloCity and the VoloXPro. Both aircraft are evolutions of the company’s existing 2X prototype. The VoloXPro targets the Light Sports eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) market segment, with certification anticipated by the end of 2026. In parallel, the VoloCity is designed as an urban electric passenger transport vehicle, aiming to secure certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in 2027.
To meet these ambitious certification timelines, Volocopter plans to establish a dedicated “sandbox” test environment at its Bruchsal facility in Germany later this year. This isolated testing ground will enable the company to simulate realistic flight operations for both aircraft, a critical step in satisfying regulatory requirements. Under EASA’s Light Sport Aircraft category, Volocopter must accumulate a minimum of 150 flight hours during beta testing, a significant milestone in the certification process.
David Bausek, Volocopter’s CEO, highlighted the company’s progress since the acquisition. He noted that the realignment phase has yielded substantial product improvements. To manage the delivery of parts and components efficiently, the company will employ short-term work arrangements alongside other flexible organizational measures. Bausek emphasized that these strategies will not alter the company’s development and certification objectives.
Navigating a Competitive and Evolving Market
Volocopter’s renewed efforts come amid intensifying competition within the advanced air mobility sector. Competitors such as Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation are also striving to launch air taxi services, with Joby recently involved in a trade-secret lawsuit against Archer, underscoring the fierce rivalry shaping the industry. Regulatory approval remains a formidable challenge for all participants, as authorities endeavor to adapt existing frameworks to the unique requirements of eVTOL aircraft.
The broader market landscape is evolving rapidly, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. China is aggressively promoting a “low-altitude economic revolution,” positioning itself to lead in advanced air mobility. Interest in urban air transport is surging across the region, heightening the stakes for companies like Volocopter as they compete for certification and market share. The coming years are poised to be decisive for the future of urban air mobility worldwide.
