AE Industrial Partners Appoints Aviation Veteran John Plueger as Senior Advisor
AE Industrial Partners has announced the appointment of John L. Plueger, a seasoned aviation executive with over 40 years of experience, as a senior advisor on its Operating Partners team. Plueger’s extensive expertise in aircraft leasing and aerospace is expected to enhance the private investment firm’s commercial aviation portfolio and support its expanding aircraft leasing operations.
Strengthening Leadership in Aerospace Investments
Headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, AE Industrial Partners focuses its investments across aerospace, national security, and related sectors. The addition of Plueger comes at a time when the firm is intensifying its presence in markets where aircraft leasing plays a pivotal role in airline fleet management, capital allocation, and growth strategies.
Plueger’s recent tenure as chief executive officer and board member of Air Lease Corporation, one of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies which he co-founded in 2010, underscores his leadership credentials. Under his guidance, Air Lease emerged as a significant player in the global leasing market. Prior to this, Plueger spent 25 years at International Lease Finance Corporation, holding senior executive roles including president, chief operating officer, and acting CEO, alongside board membership. His governance experience is further highlighted by a decade-long service on the board of Spirit AeroSystems.
David Rowe, co-CEO and managing partner at AE Industrial, expressed confidence in Plueger’s appointment, emphasizing that his leadership and deep industry knowledge will be invaluable to the firm’s operating professionals. Rowe noted that Plueger’s proven ability to create value and scale aviation businesses will strengthen AE Industrial’s capacity to support investments throughout the aerospace sector.
Navigating Opportunities and Challenges in Aerospace and Defense
Plueger’s role is anticipated to bolster AE Industrial’s operational expertise as the firm explores opportunities and addresses challenges within commercial aviation and adjacent sectors such as space and defense. While integrating his expertise into AE Industrial’s diverse portfolio—which includes companies like Rocketdyne—may require strategic alignment, industry observers suggest that his presence could enhance investor confidence in the firm’s ability to drive growth and innovation in aerospace and defense capabilities.
The appointment may also prompt competitors to intensify efforts to attract top aerospace talent and reinforce their market positions, potentially leading to more aggressive strategies in space propulsion and defense industries.
Plueger’s career spans both financial and operational dimensions of aviation, involving collaboration with aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and other key stakeholders. He has represented the sector in policy discussions, including testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives and the European Commission. Beyond his corporate roles, Plueger is a licensed pilot with multiple jet type and instructor ratings.
Reflecting on his new role, Plueger stated, “AE Industrial has built an outstanding reputation as a trusted partner across the aerospace market, combining deep expertise with a thoughtful investment approach.” He expressed eagerness to contribute to addressing the challenges facing an industry vital to global transportation and economic activity.
Plueger holds a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA and is a Certified Director through the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management. He currently serves on the boards of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and Pepperdine University. As of March 31, 2026, AE Industrial Partners managed approximately $9 billion in assets spanning private equity, venture capital, and aerospace leasing.
