American Airlines is set to nearly double its technology workforce at its Hyderabad hub, expanding from approximately 400 to 800 employees by early 2027, according to sources cited by Reuters. This strategic move highlights the airline’s growing dependence on India for critical technology operations amid a broader trend of global corporations accelerating recruitment within their global capability centres (GCCs). These centres enable companies to access engineering talent while managing rising costs and economic uncertainties in other regions.
Launched in 2024, the Hyderabad centre currently employs professionals specializing in software engineering, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Although American Airlines has not officially confirmed the precise hiring target, the company acknowledged ongoing recruitment efforts and emphasized the importance of the India hub within its global technology network. In a statement, the airline noted that teams in Fort Worth, Phoenix, and Hyderabad collaborate closely to digitize processes, deploy new tools that enhance speed to market and business outcomes, and build a more resilient airline that delivers improved experiences for both employees and customers.
Hyderabad Emerges as a Critical Aviation Technology Base
The planned expansion places American Airlines among a growing cohort of multinational corporations strengthening their technology operations in India. Over recent years, India’s GCCs have evolved beyond traditional back-office functions to assume responsibility for critical business areas including software engineering, artificial intelligence development, cybersecurity, research and development, finance and analytics, and digital transformation initiatives.
A report by Nasscom-Zinnov highlights that India now hosts over 2,100 GCCs, employing approximately 2.36 million people and generating nearly $100 billion in revenue. Hyderabad, in particular, has emerged as a significant hub for aviation technology and innovation, attracting increased investment from global companies seeking to leverage the city’s skilled workforce.
Competitive Talent Market and Shifting Workforce Strategies
American Airlines’ recruitment drive occurs amid intensifying competition for skilled technology professionals in India’s rapidly expanding sector, especially in Hyderabad. The city is witnessing a surge in technology investments, with other airlines such as Southwest Airlines also expanding their technology centres. Southwest recently announced plans to grow its Hyderabad GCC to around 1,000 employees, underscoring the competitive environment for attracting and retaining top talent.
Simultaneously, the broader Indian technology industry is undergoing significant transformation. Many firms are reassessing workforce requirements in response to AI-driven automation, resulting in increased reliance on contract and outsourced hiring. While companies like JPMorgan Chase, Walmart, McDonald’s, Nvidia, and Eli Lilly continue to ramp up technology hiring in India, others such as Cognizant are planning substantial layoffs, which may influence overall demand and market dynamics for technology professionals.
Industry experts observe that India’s GCC sector is entering a more strategic phase, with centres now directly involved in product development and enterprise transformation rather than functioning solely as support operations.

The company’s India operations are designed to complement and collaborate with U.S. teams, reflecting a broader trend among multinational corporations to integrate distributed technology functions into core business activities.
