AMETEK Expands Aviation Maintenance with Muirhead Avionics Authorized for Aerosystems Legacy Repairs
AMETEK has announced a significant enhancement to its global aviation maintenance capabilities through the designation of Muirhead Avionics, a division of AMETEK MRO, as an Authorised Repair Centre (ARC) for selected legacy avionics systems supported by Innovative Aerosystems (IA). This strategic partnership aims to bolster aftermarket support for critical avionics components that, despite being out of production, remain indispensable to aircraft operations worldwide.
Strengthening Legacy Avionics Support
Under a newly established long-term agreement, Muirhead Avionics is now certified to conduct repair and overhaul services for legacy avionics originally developed under Honeywell Aerospace and currently owned or supported by Innovative Aerosystems. Operating from ISO-accredited facilities near London Heathrow, Muirhead’s team of highly skilled technicians is authorized to maintain and service key components including Inertial Reference Units (IRUs), communication and navigation radios, transponders, and related avionics systems.
This expanded capability provides aircraft operators with enhanced assurance in maintaining aging avionics essential for navigation, communication, and flight safety. By leveraging Muirhead’s expertise in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), airlines, business jet operators, and general aviation fleets can expect faster turnaround times, improved component availability, and adherence to regulatory standards, all without the necessity of returning units to the original equipment manufacturer.
Addressing the Support Gap for Legacy Systems
The aviation maintenance industry has increasingly grappled with challenges arising from the discontinuation of OEM support for many legacy avionics systems still prevalent in business, regional, and general aviation sectors. As original equipment manufacturers have scaled back their support, operators have sought third-party solutions to sustain the operational integrity of these systems.
Innovative Aerosystems, which rebranded from Innovative Solutions & Support (IS&S) in 2025 to reflect its expanded aftermarket role, has strategically acquired and licensed select Honeywell legacy product lines. This positioning enables IA to serve as a principal provider of ongoing technical support for these avionics platforms. The collaboration with Muirhead Avionics extends IA’s global reach by authorizing repairs through a certified network, thereby mitigating operational risks for aircraft operators.
Market Dynamics and Competitive Context
AMETEK’s expansion through Muirhead Avionics occurs amid heightened competition within the aviation maintenance sector. Established firms such as Héroux-Devtek and VSE Corporation have recently augmented their maintenance services via strategic partnerships and acquisitions. Market responses to AMETEK’s move are expected to be varied; while some operators may welcome the broader service options, others have voiced concerns regarding potential increases in maintenance costs.
In response, competitors are likely to enhance their service offerings or negotiate more favorable supplier agreements to sustain competitive pricing. The business jet maintenance market is projected to grow substantially, reaching an estimated value of $10.4 billion by 2032, driven by an aging global fleet and continuous technological advancements.
Implications for Aircraft Operators
For operators of business aircraft, regional jets, and general aviation platforms, Muirhead Avionics’ new ARC status offers a certified alternative to traditional OEM service channels. This development is anticipated to contribute to reduced maintenance expenses, shorter turnaround times, and improved fleet readiness, thereby reinforcing AMETEK’s position as a comprehensive provider within the aviation aftermarket.
