Atoms and Joby Aviation Partner to Develop U.S. Vertiport Network
LOS ANGELES and SANTA CRUZ, CA — August 4, 2026 — Atoms, an industrial AI and infrastructure firm, and Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY), a pioneer in electric air taxi development, have announced a strategic partnership to acquire and develop vertiport sites across the United States. The collaboration will initially focus on Florida, New York, Texas, and California—key markets where Joby is preparing for early operations under the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP).
Advancing Electric Air Mobility Infrastructure
Joby Aviation’s electric aircraft is approaching commercial readiness, having completed piloted flights in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, and currently entering the final phase of FAA type certification. As the company moves from certification toward commercial service, attention is increasingly turning to ground infrastructure. Vertiports—specialized sites where electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft can land, recharge, and facilitate passenger transfers to ground transportation—are expected to become a critical factor in scaling electric air mobility.
Travis Kalanick, Founder and CEO of Atoms, highlighted the importance of innovative infrastructure in urban environments. He stated, “Smart cities require innovative real estate and infrastructure development. As new transport modes and smart city services emerge, designing and deploying a new asset class to support them is essential. We’re committed to efficient buildouts that benefit residents and communities.”
Atoms Real Estate brings expertise in delivering complex, power-intensive infrastructure projects, combining architecture, engineering, technology, and construction capabilities. Through this partnership, Atoms will develop vertiports as next-generation transportation hubs that integrate electric aircraft, autonomous vehicles, and ridesharing services. These hubs are designed to streamline passenger transfers, aircraft servicing, and last-mile connectivity, creating seamless urban mobility solutions.
Strategic Vision and Industry Challenges
JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, underscored the critical role of infrastructure in the success of electric air taxis. “Thoughtful urban planning can take a decade or more, and making electric flight part of everyday life will require a new generation of transportation hubs connecting aircraft, ground transportation, and communities,” he said. “As air taxis approach commercial service, the right infrastructure is increasingly vital—not just for landing and charging, but for integrating with city life. Atoms’ vision for ambitious, technology-driven infrastructure makes them a natural partner for Joby.”
Despite the promise of this partnership, significant challenges remain. Regulatory approvals, urban planning complexities, and the demands of large-scale infrastructure development could slow progress. Market analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility and profitability of air taxis, citing uncertainties around consumer demand and operational costs. Meanwhile, competitors in the urban air mobility sector are expected to accelerate their own vertiport initiatives and invest in technological advancements to maintain a competitive edge.
