EirTrade Aviation Acquires Two A320neo Aircraft Powered by PW1127 GTF Engines

EirTrade Aviation Acquires Two A320neo Aircraft Amid Global GTF Engine Shortage
EirTrade Aviation, a Dublin-based global aviation asset management and trading firm, has acquired two six-year-old Airbus A320neo aircraft equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1127 GTF engines. This strategic acquisition comes amid a widespread shortage of spare PW1100 engines, a situation exacerbated by ongoing reliability challenges that have resulted in significant aircraft groundings across the industry.
Addressing Supply Constraints Through Strategic Asset Management
EirTrade intends to offer the engines for sale to help mitigate the current supply bottleneck, while the airframes will be dismantled at its facility at Ireland West Airport Knock. The parts recovered from this process are expected to support EirTrade’s existing A320neo customer base, with materials anticipated to enter the market before the end of the year. This approach reflects the company’s commitment to optimizing asset value and addressing pressing market needs.
Lee Carey, Chief Investment Officer at EirTrade Aviation, underscored the company’s dedication to supporting both emerging technologies and established aircraft models. He emphasized that EirTrade’s acquisitions are carefully aligned with market demand to meet customer requirements. Carey also highlighted the company’s pioneering role as the first to disassemble Boeing 787 aircraft retired from commercial service, demonstrating its expertise in handling advanced aviation platforms.
Navigating Industry Challenges and Expanding Operations
The acquisition occurs at a time when Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines face intensified scrutiny due to persistent technical difficulties. These challenges have led some airlines, including ITA Airways, to contemplate legal action against the engine manufacturer. Meanwhile, competitors are exploring alternative engine options or accelerating fleet renewal plans. For example, Volaris is actively modernizing its fleet, and Embraer has expressed confidence in its continued use of GTF engines.
Industry analysts are closely monitoring EirTrade’s management of engine maintenance and repair, particularly as the company expands its operations in Ireland. The delivery process involved collaboration with Seagull Aviation, which provided Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO) services and technical representation. Both aircraft are currently in storage at EirTrade’s Knock facility, with disassembly scheduled to commence following the removal of engines and auxiliary power units.
Carey highlighted the significance of the A320neo platform, noting that over 4,000 A320 and A321neo aircraft are currently in commercial service, with an additional 7,100 on order. He described the platform as poised to become the largest commercial aircraft fleet worldwide, reaffirming EirTrade’s commitment to supporting owners and operators of these aircraft.
As the aviation sector continues to contend with engine reliability issues and supply chain pressures, EirTrade’s latest acquisition positions the company as a key player in supporting operators and lessors within the A320neo family.
