Ethiopian Airlines Receives Final Boeing 777-200LR Freighter, Enhancing Global Cargo Operations
Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of its 12th and final Boeing 777-200LR production freighter, marking a pivotal moment in the airline’s fleet development and the legacy of this aircraft model. Registered as ET-BAC, the aircraft departed Boeing’s Everett facility at Seattle Paine Field International Airport on May 23 and arrived at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport the following day. Since its arrival, ET-BAC has commenced operations to destinations including Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Bamako, Mali, with a scheduled flight to Lagos, Nigeria, on May 27.
Strategic Expansion of Cargo Capacity
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, Ethiopian Cargo emphasized the significance of this delivery, noting that it not only expands the airline’s cargo capacity but also strengthens its logistics network across key global markets. The airline highlighted that the Boeing 777-200LRF represents the final production unit of this aircraft type by Boeing, recognized as one of the most capable and efficient freighters in aviation history. Ethiopian Airlines expressed pride in receiving this iconic aircraft, underscoring the enduring partnership with Boeing and the airline’s ongoing commitment to investing in advanced fleet technology.
The integration of ET-BAC into the fleet further consolidates Ethiopian Airlines’ position in the competitive global air cargo market. Industry analysts suggest that the airline’s expanding fleet and enhanced logistics capabilities may prompt competitors to reassess and potentially increase their own cargo capacities. This development reinforces Ethiopian’s status as a leading force in air freight logistics.
A Modern and Diverse Cargo Fleet
Earlier this year, Ethiopian Airlines took delivery of its 11th Boeing 777-200LR freighter, registered ET-BAB. According to Planespotters data, the airline’s cargo fleet now includes 12 Boeing 777-200LRFs, four converted 737-800 freighters, three converted 767-300 freighters, and two new-build 767-300Fs delivered in December. This diverse and modern fleet equips Ethiopian Cargo to efficiently meet a broad spectrum of cargo requirements.
Ethiopian Airlines operates dedicated cargo services to 70 destinations and serves over 140 passenger destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Its cargo division specializes in handling a variety of shipments, including general freight, horticulture products, pharmaceuticals, valuables, live animals, and e-commerce consignments.
With the arrival of its final Boeing 777-200LR freighter, Ethiopian Airlines not only reinforces its leadership in African and global air cargo markets but also signals a sustained commitment to advancing fleet technology and expanding its logistics network to address growing worldwide demand.
