FBOs Lead Growth in Asia-Pacific Aviation Sector

FBOs Lead Growth in Asia-Pacific Aviation Sector
Rising Business Jet Activity in the Region
Business jet departures across the Asia-Pacific region are experiencing steady growth, with a 4.2 percent increase projected for 2025 compared to the previous year, according to the latest market report from Asian Sky Group. Departures are expected to rise from 125,479 in 2024 to 130,716 in 2025, with the fourth quarter alone accounting for 36,060 flights. November recorded the strongest monthly growth, surging by 10.4 percent year-on-year.
Domestic flights continue to dominate the business aviation landscape, comprising 72 percent of all activity, while international flights maintain a steady 28 percent share. Short-haul flights under two hours represent the majority of operations at 69 percent, with flights lasting between two and five hours accounting for 23 percent, and those exceeding five hours making up just eight percent.
Indian cities have emerged as key hubs within the region’s business aviation network. Mumbai leads the list of top departure points for 2025, followed by Singapore, New Delhi, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta, Bangalore, Beijing, and Hyderabad. This distribution highlights the increasing significance of South and Southeast Asia in the sector’s expansion.
The Pivotal Role of Fixed-Base Operators
Fixed-base operators (FBOs) are instrumental in supporting the region’s aviation growth. Paul Desgrosseilliers, vice chair of the Asian Business Aviation Association and general manager of ExecuJet Haite at Beijing Capital International Airport, observed that Southeast Asia, India, and Australia are outpacing North Asia and Greater China in business aviation development. He noted the widespread presence of FBOs at major international airports across North Asia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. According to Desgrosseilliers, many Asian capitals now justify and sustain dedicated FBOs and business aircraft services, which are essential for delivering safe, secure, and efficient transport.
At facilities such as ExecuJet Haite, FBOs provide a comprehensive range of services including dedicated security and customs channels for guests and crew, ground handling, fueling, parking, and maintenance support. Desgrosseilliers emphasized the importance of scaling infrastructure and services to ensure safe and sustainable operations while maintaining cost efficiency to foster further sector growth.
Challenges Amid Geopolitical and Market Pressures
Despite positive trends, the Asia-Pacific aviation sector faces significant challenges. Geopolitical tensions, particularly between the United States and China, continue to impact the broader industry. Aircraft manufacturers like Boeing are experiencing disruptions in delivery schedules and order books due to regulatory constraints and supply chain issues. Additionally, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and shifting market dynamics have produced mixed outcomes across the region, with some markets thriving while others confront operational and financial difficulties.
In response, industry players are reassessing business models and navigating evolving regulatory environments shaped by both historical crises and current geopolitical realities. This adaptive approach is critical as the sector contends with an increasingly complex global landscape.
Recognition and Future Outlook
Amid these challenges, Asia-Pacific’s FBOs continue to receive international acclaim. In January, the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBAC) was honored as the World’s Leading FBO Terminal at the 2025 World Travel Awards, marking its 18th consecutive year as Best Asian Fixed-Base Operator. The accolade follows the unveiling of HKBAC’s new world-class terminal in September, part of its expansion at Hong Kong International Airport, underscoring the city’s dedication to excellence in business aviation services.
As the Asia-Pacific aviation sector evolves, FBOs remain central to balancing growth opportunities with the complexities of a rapidly changing global environment.
