Recent achievements include the successful ground testing of a megawatt-class hybrid electric engine system developed in partnership with NASA’s Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project. Furthermore, in collaboration with NASA, BETA Technologies, and Boeing, GE Aerospace completed the first hybrid electric test flight above 30,000 feet, with the modified aircraft operating in hybrid mode for over two hours—the longest such flight recorded in the industry.
Andrews emphasized the company’s momentum, stating, “We’re consistently achieving world firsts in our field. The records we’re breaking in hybrid electric propulsion are our own. Our team’s relentless focus is advancing this technology at an unprecedented pace.” The Farnborough event provides a platform for GE Aerospace to demonstrate that hybrid electric flight is no longer a distant concept but an emerging reality.
Innovations in Engine Architecture and Industry Context
In addition to hybrid electric propulsion, GE Aerospace is highlighting its Open Fan engine architecture at Farnborough. This design departs from traditional ducted engines by employing a single rotating fan, which promises enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions.
