IndiGo Appoints Ton Dortmans to Oversee A350 Integration and MRO Expansion
IndiGo has announced the appointment of Ton Dortmans, a veteran aviation executive with four decades of industry experience, to lead the technical entry into service of its forthcoming Airbus A350 fleet and to advance the airline’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. Dortmans, who previously served as Executive Vice President for KLM Engineering & Maintenance, is set to join IndiGo in mid-August 2025.
Strategic Expansion and Technical Leadership
Dortmans’ appointment arrives at a critical juncture as IndiGo prepares to incorporate the wide-body Airbus A350, equipped with Rolls-Royce engines, into its operations. The airline’s order for these aircraft, with deliveries commencing in 2027, represents a significant move into long-haul commercial aviation. Managing the technical and operational complexities associated with the A350’s entry into service will be a formidable challenge, and Dortmans’ extensive expertise is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth integration. Industry analysts suggest that his leadership may bolster investor confidence and prompt competitors to enhance their own MRO strategies in response.
This development is part of IndiGo’s broader strategic vision, “Towards New Heights and Across New Frontiers,” launched in 2022. The airline is rapidly expanding its fleet, which currently exceeds 400 aircraft, with over 900 additional planes on order. To support this growth, IndiGo is making substantial investments in its in-house MRO infrastructure. The recent inauguration of a second hangar in Bengaluru in 2023, along with plans for further expansion, highlights the airline’s commitment to strengthening its technical capabilities domestically.
Operational Collaboration and International Growth
Dortmans will report directly to Chief Operating Officer Isidro Porqueras and work closely with Senior Vice President of Engineering Parichay Dutta as IndiGo addresses the operational and technical demands of its expanding fleet. Beyond fleet and MRO development, the airline is also enhancing its international footprint. IndiGo recently established an office in Amsterdam to support its European expansion, with new routes to Manchester and Amsterdam scheduled to launch in July 2025.
As IndiGo confronts the dual challenges of integrating new aircraft and scaling its MRO operations, the appointment of Ton Dortmans is viewed as a strategic measure to uphold operational excellence and sustain the airline’s competitive position in a rapidly evolving aviation market.
