Joby Expands in Marina, Creating Local Employment Opportunities
Joby Aviation is significantly increasing production at its facility in Marina, California, marking a transformative moment for the region’s aerospace sector. This expansion is generating hundreds of new jobs throughout the Monterey Peninsula and opening pathways for individuals without prior experience in the industry to enter the workforce.
Workforce Development and Community Engagement
The company is introducing a range of positions spanning engineering, manufacturing, and operations—roles that were previously unavailable in the local area. Cody Cleverly, Joby’s Workforce Development Lead, reflected on the impact of these efforts, noting the inspiring stories of individuals whose lives have been positively changed through the company’s initiatives.
Central to Joby’s workforce strategy is its collaboration with Monterey Bay DART (Drones, Automation, and Robotics Technology), a regional innovation leader. Together, they have established a manufacturing apprenticeship program, initially supported by the James Irvine Foundation, targeting residents of the Salinas Valley and Pajaro Valley. These communities have historically faced limited access to high-quality employment opportunities.
A Joby executive emphasized the company’s commitment to local training, stating that the facility in Marina has been developed alongside a comprehensive training pipeline. The six-month apprenticeship program provides hands-on, in-house instruction for participants without backgrounds in aerospace, aviation, or manufacturing. Since its inception in 2022, over 70 individuals have completed the program, with more than 90 percent securing employment at Joby.
A representative from DART highlighted the priority of ensuring that job opportunities reach those who have traditionally been excluded from such roles. Building on this success, Joby and DART plan to introduce an Aircraft Maintenance Technician apprenticeship this fall, further expanding training and employment prospects.
Industry Context and Future Challenges
Joby’s expansion coincides with a critical phase in the development of the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry. The company anticipates creating 690 full-time jobs across California by 2027, a projection that has been met with optimism by investors confident in Joby’s production capabilities and long-term outlook.
Nonetheless, the company faces considerable challenges as it scales operations. Regulatory complexities, intensifying competition from other eVTOL manufacturers, and the continuous need for technological innovation present ongoing obstacles. Competitors are expected to accelerate their production schedules and advance their technologies to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving air taxi market.
Despite these hurdles, Joby’s dedication to workforce development and local hiring is already yielding measurable benefits in Marina and the surrounding region, fostering new career opportunities and contributing to economic growth.
