SIA Deploys Over 160 AI Applications in Bid to Lead as ‘Digital Airline’
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has implemented more than 160 artificial intelligence (AI) applications as part of its strategic initiative to establish itself as a leading “digital airline.” Since launching its digital transformation in 2018, the national carrier has reported significant improvements, including enhanced customer satisfaction and more efficient crew scheduling.
Strategic Vision and Implementation
The airline’s AI programme is driven by a company-wide strategy spearheaded by CEO Goh Choon Phong, who has identified AI as a critical strategic asset. Under his direction, a CEO-chaired committee was formed, and the board approved an AI blueprint that prioritizes business value and the future of work. George Wang, SIA’s senior vice-president of information technology, highlighted that the airline has identified over 550 potential generative AI use cases. Among the most notable achievements is the AI-powered chatbot, Kris, which has nearly doubled its customer satisfaction score since its relaunch in July 2025.
Industry Context and Challenges
SIA’s rapid AI adoption occurs amid intensifying competition within the aviation sector, where airlines worldwide are accelerating their own digital transformations. The expanding digital transformation market, driven by enterprise AI adoption and evolving regulatory frameworks, has prompted competitors to make substantial investments in similar technologies. However, the airline industry continues to face significant operational challenges. Market observers point to difficulties experienced by carriers such as Air India, including currency depreciation, supply chain disruptions, and airspace closures, which complicate large-scale technology integration. While SIA has thus far reported positive outcomes, some skepticism remains regarding its ability to sustain and scale AI initiatives amid these headwinds.
Commitment to Digital Leadership
Despite these challenges, SIA remains steadfast in its commitment to leveraging AI to improve both customer experience and operational efficiency. The airline’s leadership views a robust digital strategy as essential to maintaining competitiveness in an evolving industry. As SIA expands its AI capabilities, the coming years will be critical in testing its capacity to integrate advanced technologies while navigating the complexities of a rapidly changing aviation landscape.
