Silk Way West Airlines Orders Two More A350F Freighters

Silk Way West Airlines Expands A350F Freighter Order Amid Industry Shifts
Silk Way West Airlines, based in Baku, Azerbaijan, has firmed up its commitment to the Airbus A350F freighter programme by ordering two additional aircraft, increasing its total order to four. This decision forms a central part of the airline’s broader strategy to modernise and expand its fleet, reinforcing its position in the global air freight market and bolstering Azerbaijan’s strategic role as a key cargo hub along the historic Silk Road.
Wolfgang Meier, President of Silk Way West Airlines, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that the expanded order marks a major milestone in the company’s growth trajectory. He highlighted the airline’s confidence in the future of sustainable air freight and noted that the A350F will play a crucial role in modernising the fleet while reducing the airline’s carbon footprint.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President for Sales of Commercial Aircraft, welcomed the repeat order, describing it as a strong endorsement of the A350F programme. He pointed out that Silk Way West Airlines, the largest cargo carrier in the Caspian Sea region, is well positioned to maintain its leadership role and contribute to Azerbaijan’s emergence as a global cargo hub. The A350F is currently in assembly in Toulouse, with test aircraft under construction.
Advanced Capabilities and Industry Context
The Airbus A350F is distinguished by its industry-leading features, including the largest main deck cargo door and optimisation for standard pallets and containers. Its airframe is composed of over 70% advanced materials, resulting in a take-off weight that is 46 tonnes lighter than competing freighters. The aircraft is uniquely designed to fully comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) enhanced CO₂ emissions standards set for 2027.
With a payload capacity of up to 111 tonnes and a range of 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometres), the A350F is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines. These engines deliver up to 40% lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous-generation freighters. The aircraft will be capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) upon entry into service, with a goal of achieving 100% SAF capability by 2030.
Despite the promising outlook, Silk Way West Airlines’ expanded order arrives amid ongoing global supply chain disruptions and potential delivery delays that continue to affect the aviation sector. These challenges, combined with increased scrutiny of the airline’s financial health and its operational capacity to integrate new freighters, may influence the pace of its fleet renewal programme.
The competitive environment in the air cargo industry is intensifying. Turkish Airlines has recently selected GEnx engines for its new Boeing 787 fleet and is pursuing a stake in Air Europa, moves that could enhance its cargo operations. Similarly, Vietjet’s firm order for 100 A321neos and MNG Air Cargo’s commitment to two A350Fs reflect a broader trend of significant aircraft acquisitions, which are likely to impact market dynamics and pricing strategies across the sector.
As of October 2025, the Airbus A350F had secured 74 orders from 12 customers, underscoring robust demand for next-generation, fuel-efficient freighters as airlines worldwide seek to modernise their fleets in response to evolving environmental and operational challenges.
