I recently experienced Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 737 MAX 8 business class on a flight from Singapore to Phnom Penh, a brief 1 hour and 40 minute journey that proved to be remarkably impressive. Narrow-body flights are often considered utilitarian, yet this particular trip stood out as my first on a Singapore Airlines narrow-body aircraft—a relatively recent addition to the carrier’s mainline fleet.
Historically, Singapore Airlines operated exclusively wide-body aircraft, with its SilkAir subsidiary managing narrow-body routes. The integration of SilkAir into Singapore Airlines has brought greater uniformity across the network, especially following the retirement of older Boeing 737-800s. Passengers on shorter routes can now expect the same elevated standards found on long-haul flights, including fully flat business class seats, inflight Wi-Fi, and seat-back entertainment systems.
Intimate and Comfortable Cabin
The business class cabin on the 737 MAX is the most intimate within the Singapore Airlines fleet, comprising just 10 seats arranged over three rows. Rows one and three feature a 2-2 seating configuration, while the second row offers exclusive solo “throne” seats in a 1-1 layout. I was fortunate to secure one of these coveted throne seats, which become available for selection 96 hours prior to departure.
For a narrow-body aircraft, the level of comfort is exceptional. The seats convert into fully flat beds, a rare amenity on flights under two hours. While the 737 MAX primarily serves short-haul destinations, it also operates longer routes such as flights to Busan. The only minor limitation is the compact lavatory, though Singapore Airlines maintains it to a high standard, providing cloth towels and premium toiletries.
Entertainment and Connectivity
Despite the aircraft’s smaller size, Singapore Airlines offers a comprehensive inflight entertainment experience through its KrisWorld system. Passengers have access to an extensive selection of movies, television shows, live TV, audio programs, and games. The interactive flight map is a particularly engaging feature, offering real-time tracking throughout the journey.
A standout aspect of the service is the complimentary Wi-Fi available to all passengers. The connection process is straightforward, requiring only the passenger’s last name and seat number. During my flight, the internet speeds were reliable, facilitating both connectivity and productivity.
Signature Service and New Campaigns
Singapore Airlines’ renowned attention to detail extends to its onboard dining, with signature items such as garlic bread featured even on short-haul flights. This dedication to quality, combined with the enhanced hard product, establishes a new benchmark for regional business class travel.
In support of its commitment to consistency and value, Singapore Airlines recently launched the “Time to Travel” campaign, offering discounted fares in both Economy and Business Class. This initiative coincides with ongoing efforts to modernize the airline’s fleet and product offerings.
