AECC Showcases Green Engine Technology at AERO Asia in Zhuhai
The Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) is prominently displaying its latest eco-friendly aviation engines at the 2025 AERO Asia exhibition in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. This event highlights China’s accelerating advancements in hybrid and hydrogen propulsion technologies, positioning AECC at the forefront of sustainable aviation innovation.
Innovations in Hybrid and Hydrogen Propulsion
AECC’s exhibition features 29 newly developed propulsion products, including megawatt-level hybrid and fully electric power systems. A key highlight is a megawatt-class hybrid system intended for future electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft weighing between 3 to 8 tons, as well as distributed electric propulsion planes in the 10 to 20-ton range. Sun Jingchen, an AECC representative, explained that the displayed model is a 1:3 scale prototype demonstrating the system’s potential applications in eVTOL aircraft.
Another significant breakthrough is AECC’s hydrogen-powered turbine engine, which operates entirely without fossil fuels. Sun emphasized the environmental benefits, noting that while burning one kilogram of conventional aviation fuel produces three kilograms of carbon dioxide, hydrogen combustion results in zero carbon emissions. This megawatt-class hydrogen turbine engine has already become the first in China to meet full performance standards and recently completed a rigorous 60-hour continuous endurance test. Sun acknowledged the challenges faced during development, describing the process as a fundamental departure from traditional engine design concepts.
Commercial Prospects and Industry Challenges
AECC’s green engine technologies have attracted considerable commercial interest. Hu Yexin, director of AECC’s Southern General Aviation power division, revealed that the company plans to sign cooperation agreements or letters of intent with 17 clients during the airshow, with a combined value exceeding 1 billion yuan (approximately 1.41 billion U.S. dollars).
Despite these promising developments, AECC confronts significant challenges. The company must compete with established global engine manufacturers while managing the high costs associated with developing and deploying sustainable propulsion systems. Additionally, extensive testing and regulatory approvals remain necessary before these technologies can achieve widespread adoption. Although market responses have been largely positive, reflecting a growing demand for sustainable aviation solutions, some skepticism persists regarding the performance and reliability of these new engines. Competitors in the industry may respond by accelerating their own green technology initiatives or pursuing strategic partnerships to strengthen their market positions.
AERO Asia 2025: A Platform for Innovation
The AERO Asia show, which opened on Thursday and runs through November 30, has attracted over 380 companies from 22 countries. With a focus on innovation in low-altitude flight and general aviation, this year’s theme, “A New Era: Explore More,” underscores the sector’s commitment to technological progress. AECC’s green engine technologies have become a focal point at the event, illustrating both the potential and the complexities involved in advancing sustainable aviation.
