Civil Aviation Ministry Reports No Fault in Fuel Control Switches Following Air India Crash
New Delhi — The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has announced that no abnormalities were detected in the fuel control switches of Air India Flight AI-171, which tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad International Airport last year, resulting in 260 fatalities. This update was provided by Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Muralidhar Mohol, during a session in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Examination of Fuel Control Switches and Ongoing Investigations
A thorough inspection of the fuel control switches, including the structural integrity of the switch detents and their locking mechanisms, was conducted at the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) facility in Seattle. According to Minister Mohol, the examination revealed no faults or abnormalities in these components. However, he noted that a detailed inspection of the entire thrust control module remains underway at the OEM facility.
The fuel control switches had become a central focus of the investigation after preliminary reports indicated that both engine fuel switches had shifted from the run to cut-off position shortly after takeoff, leading to a loss of thrust. While the switches themselves have been cleared of any defects, the ongoing analysis of the thrust control module is considered crucial to fully understanding the cause of the accident.

The Civil Aviation Ministry emphasized that the investigation is still in progress, with all potential causes and contributing factors being meticulously examined. Minister Mohol assured that once the inquiry is complete, the final report, encompassing all findings, will be published on the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s official website. He also addressed concerns regarding delays, dismissing any allegations of undue postponement in the investigative process.
