Dreamfly Innovations to Build Aviation Battery Facility in Bengaluru
Dreamfly Innovations, a prominent Indian deep-tech company specializing in advanced aviation battery technologies, has announced plans to establish a 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility in North Bengaluru. The new plant will initially have an annual production capacity of 100 MWh, with the potential to expand to 200 MWh, positioning it as one of India’s largest dedicated aviation battery manufacturing units. The facility is primarily aimed at serving the rapidly expanding drone industry.
Strengthening India’s Drone Ecosystem and Indigenous Manufacturing
The facility will focus on producing high-performance aviation batteries tailored for diverse drone applications, including defense, surveillance, infrastructure inspection, agricultural spraying, logistics, and emerging air mobility platforms such as air taxis. By manufacturing these batteries domestically, Dreamfly seeks to fortify India’s drone supply chain and reduce dependence on imported battery technologies. This initiative aligns with the country’s broader ambition to become a global hub for drone manufacturing and advanced aerial mobility.
Currently, Dreamfly achieves 77% indigenous content in its products, reflecting compliance with the Kisan Drone Policy and the Indian government’s localization efforts. The company’s emphasis on developing advanced battery solutions within India is expected to enable local drone manufacturers to source critical power systems domestically, thereby promoting self-reliance in advanced manufacturing technologies and reducing import reliance.
Navigating Market Dynamics and Technological Challenges
Kajal Shah, Co-Founder and CEO of Dreamfly Innovations, underscored the critical role of battery technology in enhancing drone performance, safety, and reliability. As India’s drone economy grows, domestic expertise in aviation batteries becomes increasingly essential. Shah noted that the new facility will enable Dreamfly to supply state-of-the-art batteries to Indian manufacturers, supporting national initiatives such as Viksit Bharat, Make in India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Despite these ambitions, Dreamfly faces considerable challenges in a competitive global market. Established players like CATL and EVE Energy are expanding manufacturing capacities across Europe and Asia, intensifying competition. The sector is also witnessing rapid technological advancements, exemplified by innovations such as Air Energy’s lithium-air batteries, which push the boundaries of energy density. Additionally, competitors are making strategic investments, including Midwest Energy’s new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility and Sicona’s silicon-carbon battery anode material plant. These developments may lead to increased regulatory scrutiny and further innovation within the aviation battery market.
Investment and Industry Implications
Vikas Verma, Partner at Avaana Capital, which supports Dreamfly’s expansion, emphasized that the new facility strengthens Dreamfly’s position as a leading innovator in next-generation battery technologies. He described the investment as a significant milestone in advancing India’s aerial mobility ecosystem by reducing import dependence and enabling domestic manufacturers to develop safer, more reliable, and globally competitive platforms.
Dreamfly’s new manufacturing unit highlights the company’s long-term commitment to advancing India’s deep-tech manufacturing capabilities. By scaling indigenous aviation battery technologies, Dreamfly aims to support the next phase of growth in India’s drone industry and establish a robust domestic supply chain for advanced aerial systems. This project is expected to enhance India’s technological self-reliance, foster innovation in battery manufacturing, and reinforce the country’s position as a future leader in drone and advanced aviation technologies.
