Embraer Regains South American Market Share from Airbus A220 in One Year
A Resurgence in the Small Narrowbody Aircraft Market
The market for small narrowbody aircraft, while smaller than that for mainline jets, remains a critical arena for manufacturers vying for global dominance. Embraer has historically been a leading player in this segment, with its E-Jet family accumulating nearly 2,000 orders since its inception. However, the company’s next-generation E2 series initially faced challenges in matching the sales momentum of the Airbus A220, formerly known as the Bombardier C Series, which has steadily expanded its global market share.
Recent developments, particularly in South America, indicate a notable shift in this competitive landscape. Over the past year, Embraer’s E2 program achieved its strongest sales performance to date, securing 154 orders worldwide. Of these, 44 orders originated from two major South American customers, underscoring Embraer’s renewed strength in its home region and building upon earlier commitments from Azul Linhas Aéreas.
Regional Dynamics and Competitive Challenges
This regional success contrasts sharply with the Airbus A220’s limited footprint in South America, where it has only one customer, FlyBondi, which placed an order for 15 aircraft with options for an additional five. In comparison, Embraer’s E2 series has gained significant traction among key regional carriers. In July, Colombia’s Abra Group, the parent company of Avianca and GOL, ordered 20 E195-E2 aircraft, along with additional purchase options and rights. This followed LATAM Airlines’ September order for 24 E195-E2s and 50 options. When combined with Azul’s earlier order, Embraer’s E195-E2 sales in South America approach 200 units, including all options.
Despite this resurgence, Embraer faces ongoing challenges. Airbus has responded by enhancing engine reliability on the A220 and offering competitive pricing to defend its market position. Additionally, Airbus leverages its broader A320neo family and addresses operational issues to maintain its appeal among airlines.
Broader Portfolio and Global Market Position
Embraer’s recovery is further supported by its diversified product portfolio, which includes the C-390 Millennium military transport jet. This broader range of offerings has renewed interest among airlines, influencing fleet strategies that prioritize operational flexibility and long-term support.
On a global scale, the Airbus A220 continues to lead in total orders, with the E2 program receiving approximately half as many. The A220-300 variant has notably outpaced the smaller A220-100, which has just over 100 orders. The E195-E2, comparable in size to the A220-100, has secured over 400 orders worldwide, while the smaller E190-E2 has experienced more modest sales.
Recent international wins for Embraer include orders from Finnair, SAS, All Nippon Airways, and Avelo Airlines, highlighting the E2’s expanding global presence. Ultimately, competition between the E2 and A220 is shaped by each airline’s unique operational needs and strategic priorities rather than by aircraft specifications alone.
As Embraer regains ground in South America, the evolving rivalry between these two manufacturers underscores the complexity and competitiveness of the small narrowbody market, where innovation, pricing strategies, and regional focus remain decisive factors.
