Emirates' Sheikh Ahmed Says Boeing Is Best Positioned to Build Larger Jets

Emirates’ Sheikh Ahmed Endorses Boeing as Leading Manufacturer for Larger Jets
Emirates chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed has affirmed that Boeing is currently best positioned to fulfill the airline’s demand for larger aircraft, particularly as it seeks a successor to the iconic Airbus A380 superjumbo. Speaking to The National, Sheikh Ahmed stated, “Yes, they are the only one available today,” when asked if Boeing is the leading contender for Emirates’ future fleet requirements.
This endorsement follows Emirates’ recent $38 billion order for 65 additional Boeing 777X widebody jets, underscoring Boeing’s dominant position in the large aircraft market. Despite the 777X program facing delays of seven years, Emirates remains committed to the 777-9 model, which Sheikh Ahmed described as the only aircraft capable of meeting the airline’s high-capacity needs once the A380 retires in the early 2040s. The agreement also contemplates the potential development of the larger 777-10 variant, which remains in the feasibility stage.
Emirates’ Fleet Strategy and Industry Dynamics
Sheikh Ahmed emphasized that Boeing is currently the sole manufacturer offering aircraft with seating capacities exceeding 335 passengers, aligning with Emirates’ preference for larger jets. As the world’s largest international airline and operator of widebody aircraft, Emirates maintains a fleet comprising 232 Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 planes.
While Airbus has the technological capability to develop a larger version of its A350-1000, Sheikh Ahmed highlighted the importance of manufacturers responding effectively to airline needs. “Who will listen, they will win,” he remarked during an interview at the Dubai Airshow. Emirates has yet to place an order for the A350-1000, citing concerns over the durability and performance of its Rolls-Royce engines in the Gulf’s challenging hot and dusty environment. The airline is seeking assurances that engine maintenance intervals can be extended, ensuring engines remain “on-wing” longer. Sheikh Ahmed expressed confidence that Airbus could address these issues, noting that Emirates already operates 13 of the smaller A350-900 variant, which he described as “excellent.”
The substantial Boeing order comes despite previous criticisms of the manufacturer’s performance, reflecting a complex but crucial partnership. Market responses to the deal have been positive, signaling renewed confidence in Boeing’s capacity to deliver on large jet programs. The collaboration with General Electric and support for the 777-10 feasibility study further indicate potential shifts within the aerospace industry.
Emerging Competitors and Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Sheikh Ahmed acknowledged the possibility of new entrants challenging the current duopoly of Airbus and Boeing. He pointed to manufacturers such as Brazil’s Embraer, Canada’s Bombardier, and China’s Comac as potential future players in the market. During the Dubai Airshow, Sheikh Ahmed visited Comac’s C919 jetliner and commented on China’s rapid advancements in both aviation and automotive sectors. Additionally, India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has partnered with Russia to produce the SJ-100 jet, a development that could disrupt established regional market dynamics.
“For us to look at it today as Emirates, for us…” Sheikh Ahmed suggested, indicating the airline’s openness to exploring alternative options as the global aviation landscape continues to evolve.
