General Aviation Poised for Growth in 2026
The general aviation sector is entering 2026 with considerable momentum, driven by increasing demand for private and business air travel. This positive trajectory, however, is tempered by a substantial backlog of orders and ongoing challenges that complicate the outlook for manufacturers.
Market Dynamics and Industry Challenges
Throughout 2025, manufacturers contended with fluctuating tariffs and persistent supply chain disruptions. Despite these obstacles, quarterly sales data from FLYING’s annual general aviation market survey indicate that nearly all reporting aircraft manufacturers increased their sales compared to 2024, with billings rising significantly. Industry veterans, however, caution against over-optimism, recalling the mid-1980s when rising billings masked declining unit sales, ultimately leading to a sharp downturn by 1986. Notably, some manufacturers did not experience growth in unit sales, underscoring the need for careful scrutiny of market data.
Foreign manufacturers such as Daher, Diamond Aircraft, Pilatus Aircraft, and Tecnam Aircraft faced significant setbacks due to U.S. tariffs imposed on imported aircraft in late spring 2025, which were subsequently lifted in late summer. These tariffs caused delays and interruptions in deliveries to the U.S. market. While some companies accelerated shipments following the tariff removal, only Embraer and Bombardier succeeded in increasing deliveries despite these headwinds. Bombardier’s performance was particularly notable given the concurrent threat of “decertification” in the U.S.
Geopolitical tensions continue to pose risks, especially for major players like Boeing, which must navigate the complex and ongoing frictions between the United States and China. These geopolitical factors add complexity to an industry already challenged by supply chain bottlenecks and rising costs associated with sustainable aviation fuel. In response, manufacturers are pursuing strategic initiatives, including the development of new routes and partnerships designed to enhance connectivity and support future expansion.
Supply Chain and Production Outlook
Supply chain disruptions, many originating during the COVID-19 pandemic, remain a significant impediment to production. Michel Adam de Villiers, vice president of sales at Daher, highlighted ongoing delays at both French and U.S. facilities, largely due to a shortage of skilled labor. Despite these challenges, progress is evident. Daher is sufficiently confident in the market’s prospects to invest in a new production facility in Florida and anticipates delivering 60 units of its recently launched TBM 980 model in 2026. This model’s purchase price includes five years of maintenance, a factor expected to enhance its market appeal.
Jens Hennig of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) expressed a similarly optimistic view, noting that the jet market has surpassed its previous delivery peak from 2019 and is approaching record levels seen in the prior decade. Among manufacturers reporting backlog figures, total order books for premium products now exceed $60 billion, reflecting strong demand and a robust pipeline.
Market Highlights and Future Prospects
The Cirrus Aircraft SF50 Vision Jet continues to perform strongly in the owner-flown segment, with 106 units sold in 2025 compared to 101 in 2024. Its success is attributed to the commonality of Garmin avionics across the Cirrus product line, facilitating upgrades for SR owners to the jet model. Additionally, advanced safety features such as Garmin’s Autoland system and the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) contribute to its appeal.
Despite the persistent challenges of supply chain constraints, geopolitical uncertainties, and rising operational costs, the general aviation industry is positioned for significant growth in 2026. This outlook is underpinned by robust demand, strategic investments, and a cautiously optimistic industry sentiment.
