New Virgin Australia regional jet passes through Canberra on delivery flight

Virgin Australia’s New Regional Jet Makes Stopover in Canberra on Delivery Flight
Virgin Australia’s first Embraer E190-E2 regional jet, the initial aircraft in an eight-plane order, made a significant stop in Canberra last week during its delivery flight to Perth. Named “Coral Bay,” the jet completed an extensive 26,000-kilometre ferry journey from São José dos Campos, Brazil, with scheduled refueling stops in Texas, California, Hawaii, and Fiji before arriving in the Australian capital. Canberra served as a critical refueling point ahead of the aircraft’s final leg to Western Australia.
Advancements in Regional Aviation
The E190-E2 marks a substantial technological and environmental upgrade over Virgin Australia’s previous regional fleet. The airline retired its older E-190s in 2018 amid a strategic fleet consolidation centered on Boeing 737 aircraft. The new Embraer model offers a 30% reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions compared to the Fokker 100 jets it is set to replace. These gains are attributed to the latest Pratt & Whitney PW1900G geared turbofan engines, enhanced aerodynamic design, and a redesigned cabin interior.
Configured to seat 100 passengers, the aircraft includes 92 economy seats arranged four abreast and eight business class seats arranged three abreast. Additionally, the E190-E2 features “Economy X” seating, which provides extra legroom for a premium fare. With a maximum range of up to six hours, the jet is well-suited to serve both regional passenger routes and the extensive fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operations that support Western Australia’s mining industry.
Strategic Fleet Renewal and Regional Connectivity
Virgin Australia placed its order for the E190-E2 jets last year, reflecting growing passenger demand and improved financial stability following its emergence from receivership. The airline’s positive trajectory has been further bolstered by its recent relisting on the Australian Stock Exchange, government approval for Qatar Airways’ investment, and the resumption of international flights between Sydney and Doha in partnership with Qatar Airways.
The new jets will be based in Perth and will gradually replace the ageing Fokker 100 aircraft operated by Network Aviation on Virgin Australia’s behalf. Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), which was formed following the 2013 acquisition of Skywest, currently operates approximately 250 weekly flights connecting Perth with regional centres including Albany, Broome, Busselton, Derby, Esperance, Exmouth, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Kununurra, Newman, Onslow, and Port Hedland. VARA also operates routes linking Kalgoorlie with Melbourne, Broome and Kununurra with Darwin, and Port Hedland with Bali, serving both regular passengers and FIFO mining workers.
Operational Challenges and Industry Impact
The integration of the E190-E2 into Virgin Australia’s regional operations presents several challenges, notably in crew training and managing the transition from the Fokker 100 fleet. Nonetheless, the market response has been largely positive, with industry analysts emphasizing the aircraft’s operational efficiency and environmental advantages. Competitors are closely monitoring Virgin Australia’s fleet renewal strategy, which may influence adjustments in their own regional service offerings.
Nick Rohrlach, group executive of Virgin Australia Regional Airlines, described the arrival of the new aircraft as a pivotal milestone in modernizing the airline’s regional fleet. He highlighted the benefits of enhanced operational flexibility and an improved passenger experience as key outcomes of this fleet upgrade.
