SriLankan Airlines Sponsors Student Delegate for Mission ShakthiSAT
SriLankan Airlines has announced its sponsorship of 18-year-old Seneesa Goonewardena and ShakthiSAT Ambassador Dr. Sulochana Segera, facilitating their travel to India for the upcoming Mission ShakthiSAT. This global STEM initiative, scheduled to take place at Gautam Buddha University from August 22 to 31, 2026, will bring together young women from 108 countries to collaboratively design an educational satellite. The satellite launch is planned for between September and October 2026.
Advancing STEM Education Through Aviation Support
This sponsorship reflects a notable evolution in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies of airlines. Traditionally focused on community outreach, national carriers like SriLankan Airlines are increasingly prioritizing support for educational and scientific mobility. By enabling travel for student delegations, academic forums, and STEM exchanges, these airlines are forging stronger connections between regional aviation networks and global educational opportunities.
Mission ShakthiSAT exemplifies this shift by providing young researchers, particularly from developing countries, with access to high-level scientific programs. Such initiatives help bridge gaps in opportunity and foster international collaboration in space science, underscoring the growing role of aviation in supporting academic advancement.
Sri Lanka’s Representation in a Global Space Initiative
For Sri Lanka, participation in Mission ShakthiSAT represents a significant achievement in both education and science. The project unites young women from over 100 countries to design and develop a satellite aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Seneesa Goonewardena secured her position as Sri Lanka’s delegate following a competitive national selection process involving more than 200 candidates.
The initiative was introduced in Sri Lanka by Dr. Srimathy Kesan, Founder and CEO of Space Kidz India, an organization recognized for its educational satellite programs. The satellite integration and leadership activities will be conducted at Gautam Buddha University in India during the event dates, with the satellite launch scheduled shortly thereafter.
Deepal Perera, Manager of Corporate Communications at SriLankan Airlines, expressed the airline’s pride in supporting young students as they engage with advanced space science concepts on an international platform.
Balancing Corporate Responsibility and Operational Demands
While SriLankan Airlines’ sponsorship highlights its commitment to STEM education and youth empowerment, it also illustrates the ongoing challenge of balancing CSR initiatives with operational costs. The airline’s decision has been met with positive responses from stakeholders who value investment in future scientific leaders. Nonetheless, such initiatives require careful resource management to ensure long-term sustainability.
The move may prompt competitors within the aviation sector to pursue similar sponsorships or enhance their contributions to educational and technological advancement, potentially intensifying the industry’s focus on CSR-driven programs.
