Thai Airways International Receives First Factory-Fresh Boeing 787-9
Thai Airways International has taken delivery of its first factory-fresh Boeing 787-9, marking a pivotal step in the airline’s fleet modernization efforts. The aircraft, registered HS-TWE and equipped with GE Aerospace GEnx engines, is the initial unit of four 787-9s expected to join the fleet by the end of the year. Managed by lessor AerCap, the new jet is configured to accommodate 298 passengers, with 30 seats in business class and 268 in economy.
Strategic Fleet Development and Engine Selection
This delivery highlights a strategic shift for Thai Airways, which has previously operated Boeing 787s powered by both GE and Rolls-Royce engines. Among the four 787s currently in service, two are mid-life aircraft fitted with GEnx-1B engines, while the other two utilize Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The introduction of the new GEnx-powered 787-9 signals the airline’s intent to enhance fleet commonality and operational efficiency.
The expansion of the GEnx-powered fleet follows a significant order placed at the Singapore Airshow in February 2024, where Thai Airways committed to acquiring 45 Boeing 787-9s, with an additional 35 options. This substantial procurement underscores the airline’s confidence in the 787-9’s performance and may influence competitive dynamics between engine manufacturers. As GE engines power an increasing portion of Thai’s 787 fleet, the move is likely to intensify competition with Rolls-Royce and encourage other carriers to reassess their engine choices and fleet renewal strategies.
Enhancing Efficiency and Supporting Growth
Thai Airways emphasized the advantages of the Boeing 787-9, citing its superior fuel efficiency, advanced technology, and operational flexibility. These attributes align with the airline’s sustainability goals and ambitions for long-haul network expansion. By increasing fleet commonality, Thai Airways aims to optimize capacity deployment, improve efficiency across its network, and better meet rising travel demand.
The arrival of new, factory-fresh 787-9s is expected to strengthen Thai Airways’ competitive position and support its long-term growth objectives in the international aviation market.
