Airbus Delivers 500th A220 Amid March Production Increase

Airbus Marks Milestone with 500th A220 Delivery Amid Production Growth
Airbus has reached a significant milestone with the delivery of its 500th A220 aircraft, coinciding with a notable increase in production activity during March 2026. The European aerospace manufacturer confirmed on April 10 that it had delivered 60 commercial aircraft in March alone, surpassing the combined total of 54 units delivered in January and February. This uptick reflects Airbus’s ongoing efforts to accelerate output despite persistent supply chain challenges.
Production and Delivery Trends
Airbus is targeting approximately 870 aircraft deliveries for the full year of 2026. With the first quarter now complete, the company has recorded 114 deliveries, representing 13.1% of its annual goal. While March’s delivery figures indicate progress, they remain below the 71 aircraft delivered in the same month last year, suggesting that overall production growth is still gradual. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury has acknowledged the company’s continued production ramp-up but highlighted significant constraints caused by shortages of Pratt & Whitney engines.
The engine supply issue arises from Pratt & Whitney’s prioritization of maintenance and repair services for in-service Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines powering the A320 family, which has delayed the delivery of new engines to Airbus. This bottleneck has impacted Airbus’s ability to meet its full production potential.
The A220 Program and Customer Deliveries
The A220 program, originally developed by Bombardier as the C Series before joining Airbus in 2018, has become a cornerstone of the manufacturer’s single-aisle aircraft offerings. The A220-100 and A220-300 models are assembled in Mirabel, Canada, and Mobile, Alabama. Since entering service, the A220 has transported over 220 million passengers across nearly 2,000 routes, praised for its fuel efficiency, reduced CO₂ emissions, and spacious cabin design.
The 500th A220 delivery was announced on April 10, 2026, with airBaltic likely receiving this milestone aircraft. The Latvian carrier recently took delivery of its fourth A220-300 of the year, registered YL-BTF, at the end of the previous week. The last recorded A220 delivery before this milestone was on March 31, 2025, to a private customer.
In March 2026, Airbus delivered aircraft to 38 customers, including major airlines such as Emirates, Wizz Air, and Delta Air Lines. Emirates received three A350-900 widebodies, Wizz Air took delivery of three A321neos, and Delta Air Lines received both an A220-300 and an A321neo.
Order Book Expansion
Alongside delivery announcements, Airbus reported receiving new orders totaling 311 aircraft in March 2026. Significant purchases came from lessor AerCap, which ordered 100 aircraft, and China Eastern Airlines, which placed an order for 101 units. Additional orders were placed by Delta Air Lines, Atlas Air, and Juneyao Air. Furthermore, two undisclosed customers each ordered 10 A220-300s, underscoring continued demand for the program despite ongoing supply chain challenges.
