Economic Impact of Aviation in Phoenix

Economic Impact of Aviation in Phoenix
National Aviation Day, observed annually on August 19, commemorates the extraordinary advancements in aviation since the Wright Brothers’ inaugural flight in 1903. In Arizona, the Phoenix Airport System stands as the state’s largest economic driver, fueling growth and supporting the expanding population of the Valley.
Phoenix Airport System: A Major Economic Engine
The three principal airports in Phoenix—Sky Harbor International, Deer Valley, and Goodyear—collectively generate an economic impact exceeding $44.3 billion annually. Phoenix Sky Harbor alone employs more than 47,000 individuals, serving as a critical employment hub while accommodating over 140,000 passengers and approximately 1,300 flights each day. The City of Phoenix Aviation Department has garnered national acclaim as a premier workplace, achieving Level 3 accreditation in Airport Workforce Development from Airports Council International – North America.
The efficient operation of these airports depends on a dedicated and skilled workforce. For instance, Lourdes C., an Aviation Supervisor II and Terminal Operations Coordinator, oversees airline schedules and gate assignments to maintain smooth flight operations. Such roles are vital to the seamless functioning of Phoenix’s airports.
Future Investments and Challenges
As passenger volumes continue to rise, the Phoenix Airport System is proactively investing in its infrastructure through a comprehensive 20-year plan. Key projects include the construction of Taxiway U to link the north and south airfields on the airport’s west side, the addition of a second north concourse in Terminal 3, and the development of a new terminal on the west side of Sky Harbor. Importantly, these initiatives are financed without the use of local tax revenues.
Despite these forward-looking investments, the aviation sector in Phoenix faces several significant challenges. The integration of advanced air mobility (AAM) technologies demands substantial infrastructure upgrades, resulting in considerable short-term costs for airlines collaborating with manufacturers. Fuel price volatility remains a persistent concern, as fluctuations in global crude oil prices directly affect aviation turbine fuel costs and narrow operating margins. Additionally, supply chain disruptions—such as shortages of engine components and precision micro-electronics—have caused delays in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance. The industry also grapples with skilled labor shortages and mounting pressure on airport infrastructure due to increasing metro airside congestion.
Sustained Economic and Community Contributions
Despite these obstacles, Phoenix’s airports continue to play a pivotal role in economic development, business growth, tourism, and community connectivity throughout Arizona. According to Airports Council International (ACI) World, Phoenix Deer Valley Airport was the busiest general aviation airport in North America in 2025, recording nearly 500,000 takeoffs and landings. Meanwhile, Phoenix Goodyear Airport remains integral to aircraft maintenance, repair, flight training, and corporate aviation.
All three airports honor the rich legacy of aviation, with Sky Harbor marking the 90th anniversary of its acquisition by the City of Phoenix in 2025. As the region’s aviation sector adapts to emerging challenges and invests in future growth, it continues to exemplify the enduring economic and community significance of the industry.
