United Introduces Economy Plus Seats with Extra Elbow Room

United Introduces Economy Plus Seats with Extra Elbow Room on Airbus A321XLR Fleet
United Airlines has unveiled a new seating innovation for its forthcoming Airbus A321XLR fleet, featuring a specially designed row in Economy Plus® that offers enhanced comfort through open middle seats converted into shared spaces with large custom tables. This novel configuration, aimed at providing passengers with additional elbow room, will be available for purchase later this year, coinciding with the launch of new flights on the aircraft.
Enhanced Comfort and Unique Seating Configuration
The new Economy Plus row will be installed on all 50 of United’s A321XLR aircraft, positioning United as the only U.S. carrier to offer this distinctive seating option. The airline is also exploring the possibility of extending this concept to other aircraft types in the future. This development follows United’s recent introduction of the United Relax RowSM, a set of economy seats on Boeing 787 and 777 widebody jets that can convert into a lie-flat surface, expected to debut in early 2027.
Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience across its fleet. He noted that the A321XLR, United’s newest aircraft, not only features all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris® but now also includes Economy Plus seats with increased leg and elbow room, offering customers a wider range of options.
Each A321XLR will include one row where the middle seats are removed and replaced with large, custom-designed tables that span the open space. These fixed tables, covered in a soft leather-like material and equipped with cup indentations, provide passengers seated by the window or aisle with additional space. This design complements the three inches of extra legroom already available in Economy Plus on the XLR, making it particularly suitable for longer international flights.
Industry Context and Market Response
United’s introduction of these enhanced Economy Plus seats reflects a broader industry trend toward improving passenger comfort as airlines seek to differentiate themselves in a competitive market. While the innovation has been welcomed by travelers desiring more space, it has also sparked discussion about the growing divide between premium and economy classes. Some industry analysts caution that such enhancements may further segment the travel experience, catering increasingly to high-paying customers.
Competitors are anticipated to respond by upgrading their own seating configurations, potentially initiating a wider trend of improved comfort across all travel classes. However, United’s new seating strategy has also attracted scrutiny regarding its pricing practices. The airline recently faced legal challenges over allegations of charging extra for window seats that lacked actual windows, raising concerns about transparency and the value of seat selection fees.
Features of the Airbus A321XLR
The Airbus A321XLR represents United’s most premium narrowbody aircraft to date, designed primarily for international short- to medium-haul routes. It offers 32 premium seats—16 more than the Boeing 757s it replaces—including new United Polaris Studio suites with all-aisle access, lie-flat beds, and privacy doors. All seats are equipped with large 4K OLED screens featuring Bluetooth connectivity. Passengers also benefit from larger overhead bins and a rear snack bar, enhancing the overall travel experience.
United plans to release additional details, including pricing information, ahead of the new Economy Plus seats becoming available for purchase later this year.
